He met Marg Helgenberger in New York City in 1984, while guest-starring on her soap Ryan's Hope. The two became friends and started dating in 1986. They married in 1989 and have one son, Hugh Howard Rosenberg (born October 21, 1990). On December 1, 2008, Rosenberg and Helgenberger announced their separation. On March 25, 2009, Helgenberger filed for divorce.
Appeared with his wife, Marg Helgenberger, in the "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" (2000) episode "Weeping Willows". According to Helgenberger, on the DVD commentary, he was uncomfortable treating her the way he does, even though it was just a fictional encounter.

CSI star Marg Helgenberger has separated from her husband of nearly 20 years, actor Alan Rosenberg.
"After 19 years of marriage, Marg and Alan have decided to take some time apart," the actress`s rep told PEOPLE on Monday. "They love and respect each other and remain committed to their family."
Helgenberger, 50, and Rosenberg, 57, have an 18-year-old son.
Rosenberg is also president of the 120,000-member Screen Actors Guild, which is at an impasse in contract negotiations with the studios, with the possibility of a strike looming.
