As editor-in-chief of Jazz and Pop she first interviewed Jim Morrison of the rock band The Doors in January 1969. After the interview, they began a correspondence, became friends and later lovers. She and Morrison exchanged marriage vows in a Celtic Pagan handfasting ceremony in June 1970. Before witnesses, one of them a Presbyterian minister, the couple signed a document declaring themselves wedded. Although handfasting, like other religious ceremonies, is not legal unless the appropriate State paperwork is filed, she later changed her legal name to include Morrison`s name, and Morrison addressed letters and poems to her as "Patricia Morrison" and "my wife, Patricia".

Relationship Timeline

July, 1971 - Breakup

24th June, 1970 - Rumored Marriage

Jim Morrison was not legally married to anyone nor was Patricia Kennealy even as much as his known girlfriend. Jim participated in a pagan marriage ceremony which she performed out of amusement. There was no registered marriage officiant or the required witnesses and it was not legal in the eyes of the law in New York state. His will that states he was unmarried.
Patricia Kennealy was very clear in interviews that it was not a legal marriage. She said in 1993," Jim and I were married in a handfasting ceremony which is a Celtic religious ritual. It is not a legal marriage and I would hasten to say that I have never claimed to be Jim’s legal wife, but it was very valid and very binding religious ritual."
Patricia Kennealy revealed to Victoria Balfour in her book Rock Wives that she and Jim Morrison were wed, sort of, in a witch ceremony in 1970, but that he turned "really cold" when Kennealy became pregnant--maybe, she speculates, because he had "20 paternity suits pending against him." She also answered if she thought Jim took the marriage seriously with "probably not too serious".

I interviewed Jim Morrison for Circus Magazine in October 1970. "Morrison Hotel" was released in February 1970. The song was written and recorded by the end of 1969. It was written about Pamela Courson. Jim Morrison said to me that he and Patricia Kennealy did not know each other well at that point. They has exchanged a few polite notes and she saw him only in the company of others only a three or four times. Jim also said he didn't consider their wedding in June 1970 as anything more than a creative experiment and a fun thing to do at the time. He further said there were no witnesses, only Jim and Patricia were present. If you timeline Patricia's "Strange Days" and compare Jim's schedule you will find that Patricia Kennealy spent less than a week and a half with Jim Morrison -- days, not even a month, let alone a year. So let's please reconsider the wish to credit Kennealy as the source for this song. The source for "Queen of the Highway" was Pamela." -Salli Stevenson http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=272

It was not a legal marriage. Patricia performed the ceremony and she was nor ordained to officiate a marriage in NY or anywhere. Any marriage officiant must be registered with the office of the Ordinary Clerk on Manhattan in order to perform a legally binding ceremony. "Furthermore, what makes a marriage legal can differ from county to county within a given state. In addition to any documentation needed by the state, one county may require supplementary documentation, or proof, that another county does not. A good example of this would be the requirements imposed upon any marriage officiant performing unions on the island of Manhattan. There was no registered marriage officiant or the required witnesses and it was not legal in the eyes of the law in New York state. Here is his will that states he was unmarried: http://www.truetrust.com/Famous_Wills_and_Trusts/Jim_Morrison_Will.pdf His longterm live-in girlfriend Pamela Courson used the surname "Morrison" with his apparent consent, or at least lack of concern. She was buried as Pamela Susan Morrison. After Courson's death in 1974, and after her parents petitioned the court for inheritance of Morrison's estate, the probate court in California decided that she and Morrison had once had what qualified as a common-law marriage, despite neither having applied for such status while they were living and common-law marriage not being recognized in California. Morrison's will lists him as "an unmarried person" but listed Courson as the sole heir. They had previous obtained marriage licenses in Colorado in 1967 and in Los Angeles in 1968. I'd also like to point out that this picture looks cropped and edited and that the woman in it looks NOTHING like "Kennealy".

Susan_DouglasOct 22, 2018

Is it really right to refer to these two as a "couple" when she was pretty much a regrettable one-night-stand who aggressively harassed both Jim Morrison and Pamela Courson-Morrison when she realized that Jim Morrison didn't even rank her as being one of his groupies? "Kennealy" simply had the loudest mouth, the least amount of emotional stability, the least amount of pride or shame and the most sense of entitlement compared to the many, many, many women Jim Morrison had flings with. Couple? Really? (Don't think so.)

Public post from Jim Morrison's former brother-in-law, Rev. Alan R. Graham, who was married to Jim Morrison's younger sister Anne for more than 20 years: GRAHAM: "Recently I was contacted by somebody who claimed to have a letter written by Jim Morrison to his parents. Patricia Kennealy claims that this letter was given to her by Jim at the trial in Miami, and he told her to take it to the Admiral and Clara Morrison. This is not the first time I have heard of this letter, two years ago Andy Morrison received a copy of THIS SAME LETTER from Patricia Kennealy herself when he visited her in New York. She asked him to give it to the Admiral but he did not. It is curious to me that Kennealy never tried to get this letter to the Morrisons before, like after he died. So I believe this letter to be a forgery that Kennealy was using in some sort of "Scam" to get next to the Morrison estate. Andy never went for it but he did get a free dinner and a good laugh. I also hear that Kennealy may be trying to cast some sort a spell on Andy's friend Barbara to try to use her in the same 'Gypsy Scam'. I say have at it Witch for all you will inherit for your greed is: The Wind." A.R. Graham Response to Graham's post: "In 1981 when I was producing the Rock Opera in Hollywood, I spoke with Alain Ronay, and he told me a very similar story except in was a verbal message similar in tone and content. Ronay became upset when I said I would not introduce him to Jim's parents because he had to 'Tell them in person' as per Jim's strict instructions. I believe this is where Kennealy somehow gleaned this information and is now trying to peddle it as her own experience." Jim Morrison: Friends Gathered Together", by Frank Lisciandro From Leon Barnard, former publicist for The Doors: page 299 Frank Lisciandro: Did you have a feeling that there was a strong relationship going on between Jim and Patricia when you went to pick Jim up at her apartment? I mean, were they reluctant to part, were the lovey-dovey? Leon Barnard: Oh, no, I mean when I got there, she lives in a very casual apartment in the Greenwich Village area. No, it wasn't at all like that. I don't think any claims were placed on either of them, by either one; just like WE'VE HAD THREE DAYS of fun or just being together. I didn't feel there was any special connection between the two of them. @JimMorrisonandPatriciaKennealy

Jim Morrison: Life Death Legend", by Stephen Davis page 367 "Patricia Kennely later changed the spelling of her name to Kennealy, and retold and elongated her story in her 1993 memoir Strange Days, which described in uncanny detail an alternative Jim Morrison that no one else who knew him was able to recognize. Her tone throughout the book is angry, venomous, secretive, and defensive. But she hedged about some of her bizarre claims by writing that SHE MIGHT HAVE HALLUCINATED THE WHOLE THING. She also wrote that she was high on marijuana, cocaine, and tranquilizers during the period in question. After she left music journalism, she wrote mythic romance FANTASIES for a living. Not everyone believes Patricia Kennealy's claims. She hasn't yet produced any of the letters she says Jim wrote to her. Former Elektra employees who knew and worked with both Jim and Kennealy can only vouch for her being at certain places at certain times, and for her CLAIMING she was pregnant by him. Over the years, Patricia Kennealy cleverly inserted herself into Jim Morrison's saga via the media, first in No One Here Gets Out Alive, and then in Oliver Stone's 1991 movie The Doors. Kennealy even appeared in the movie as one of the priestesses at her alleged witch wedding to Jim. (She later further changed her name to Patricia Kennealy- Morrison.) Girlfriend pregnancy and abortions were an everyday thing with Jim, whose lawyer now had multiple paternity suits to deal with. But an occult wedding was something else. Whether this, or indeed any of Kennealy's claims regarding Jim Morrison, can ever be reliably corroborated will determine if her vivid stories will survive as history, or just as a romantic subfable of the legend." @JimMorrisonandPatriciaKennealy

'No One Here Gets Out Alive', by Jerry Hopkins and Danny Sugerman: page 295 "In many ways their relationship was fairly typical for Jim. Except for Pamela, there was no one girl that he saw very often or for periods of more than a few days, and in the months since they'd met. Jim and Patricia had been in the same room probably no more than seven or eight time. Nor had there been many phone calls. A sheaf of oddly personal letters, gifts of jewelry and rare books [gifts Kennealy claims Morrison gave her, claims that have never been proven] and copies of his three privately printed books, but nothing that signaled a passionate courtship. NOR WAS THE MANNER IN WHICH JIM BEHAVED TOWARDS PATRICIA DIFFERENT FROM HIS STYLE WITH OTHERS." @JimMorrisonandPatriciaKennealy

SatireKnight: "Patricia Kennealy FAQ 9" "I mean seriously, this woman wrote a book where she viciously murdered the other Doors by filling their guts with bees, de-boning them alive, or flaying them and having their skins turned into a saddle... for pretty much ignoring her. That's not the sign that someone doesn't have issues." Lady, face it: nobody was 'slandering' you before you spoke out. Nobody gave a damn. You were only known because some of those biographers you hate so much mentioned you in their books. And it would be very difficult for people to lie about you pre-Strange Days, simply because... pretty much all they knew about you was FROM YOU. Those biographers? They got the information FROM YOU. And when we're talking about the truth, here's one: you have not given anyone one damn reason to believe your 'Strange Days' version of reality, especially since you contradicted yourself after your accounts of your affair in books, TV interviews and in the 'Rock Wives interview'. Every scrap of evidence is told to us THROUGH YOU. Jim said this, gave me that, planned this. You don't DESERVE people's belief that you're truthful and right. You EARN it. Especially since you contradict yourself ALL THE F*CKING TIME." She Dances in a Ring of Fire" Tumblr Blog Spot: "In the 1980’s, a book, 'Rock Wives', was published and in it, Patricia had no qualms about confessing that her time with Jim Morrison was, in fact, nothing but an extended one night stand, so to speak. Patricia admitted that Pamela in fact came first, and that was that. She was an accomplished fantasy author and was content to keep to herself.. when Oliver Stone began researching for his film project, however, I think it occurred to Patricia that she could capitalize on her affair, and so she did. No one has ever discussed Jim referring to her as his wife.. hell, people have evaluated Jim’s schedule at the time what with touring and all, and they were able to spend MAYBE a week and a half together. To say she is stretching it would be putting it nicely." Link: http://pamelacourson.tumblr.com/post/3591806399/found-this-on-patricia-kennealys-facebook-page @JimMorrisonandPatriciaKennealy
