While he was at Stratford, he was photographed with a youthful Swedish beauty named Harriet Lidgren. Typically, he declined to talk about her to journalists, even refusing to divulge her surname. There was no romance, he said. They married in 1969.
'I hadn't taken holidays until I married. I was a workaholic, which meant I wasn't much fun to be with. The marriage ended in 1972. It was 100 per cent my fault, but we remain close friends.'
