Ryan married his Alvin High School sweetheart, the former Ruth Holdorff, on June 25, 1967. They had three children, Reid April 21, 1971, Nolan Reese January 21, 1976, and Wendy Lynn March 22, 1977. Reid and Reese were both pitchers for the TCU Horned Frogs (Reid also pitched briefly in the minor leagues), On May 17, 2013, his son Reid was announced as president of the Houston Astros.
