He soon began using her manor house as a 'comfort stop' on his way home to Highgrove and later called her 'the only woman who really understands me'.
Before she died of cancer in 1997, aged 49, Lady Tryon told a friend about their relationship.
'He would simply ring out of the blue and say he would be passing by and would I mind if he popped in,' she said. 'I'd make sure a whisky was ready for him, then we'd chat before making ourselves more comfortable. He always left happy and I felt I'd been able to take away some of the strain and pressures of his life.'
